MSM Fake News on Hurricanes

[last update: 2017/10/04]

Mainstream Media Promote Fake News

The MSM have been pushing the hurricane / global warming lies, even though total hurricanes have not been increasing, and scientists say there is no connection. Some examples:

CNN:

Yes, climate change made Harvey and Irma worse

the consensus among scientists is that the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and warmer oceans, made those storms far more destructive than they would have been in previous decades.

Lies.

Washington Post:

Irma and Harvey should kill any doubt that climate change is real

The strongest hurricanes have gotten stronger because of global warming. Over the past two years, we have witnessed the most intense hurricanes on record for the globe

Lies.

New York Times:

Hurricane Irma Linked to Climate Change? For Some, a Very ‘Insensitive’ Question”

“If this isn’t climate change, I don’t know what is. This is a truly, truly poster child for what is to come.

For scientists, drawing links between warming global temperatures and the ferocity of hurricanes is about as controversial as talking about geology after an earthquake.”

Lies.

LA Times:

Harvey should be a warning to Trump that climate change is a global threat

Harvey’s terrible impact certainly spotlights the foolishness of ignoring climate change. … As difficult as it might be for someone so incapable of introspection and reevaluation, the president needs to understand that he has subscribed to fake science, and that he must alter his course.

Lies. (LA Times accusing Trump of subscribing to fake science? That is a laugh from a MSM rag that loved Obama’s ignorance of science (link to Obama below in this article) The LATimes always promotes their fake “science” about “climate change”.)

The Guardian (UK):

“Stop talking right now about the threat of climate change. It’s here; it’s happening”

“Leaving aside the earthquake, every one of these events [hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, earthquake in Mexico] jibes with what scientists and environmentalists have spent 30 fruitless years telling us to expect from global warming. (There’s actually fairly convincing evidence that climate change is triggering more seismic activity, but there’s no need to egg the pudding.)”

Lies. (CO2 causes earthquakes? Bizarre! But hey – it causes everything!)

(These are just a few examples: Google it and many more will show up.)

Hurricane Scientists

Hurricane scientists disagree with the MSM:

University of Washington climate scientist, Cliff Mass, states:

It is more than a little disturbing. Before the rains had ended, dozens of media outlets had published stories suggesting that global warming forced by humans (mainly by emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere) played a significant role in producing the heavy rainfall and resulting flooding associated with Hurricane Harvey.

After showing the actual scientific data in the above article, Mass states:

I could show you a lot more, but bottom line in all this is:
There is no evidence that global warming is influencing Texas coastal precipitation in the long term and little evidence that warmer than normal temperatures had any real impact on the precipitation intensity from this storm.

And:

The bottom line in this analysis is that both observations of the past decades and models looking forward to the future do not suggest that one can explain the heavy rains of Harvey by global warming, and folks that are suggesting it are poorly informing the public and decision makers. They are using hand-waving arguments to push an agenda, which observations, theory, and modeling show to be incorrect.

That’s the MSM – pushing an agenda with fake news.

So what is CNN talking about?

(From the same CNN link as in the previous  section):

The intensity, frequency and duration of North Atlantic hurricanes have increased since the early 1980s, according to the most recent National Climate Assessment, a periodic report by a team of more than 300 scientists and other experts. The 2014 report also found that the frequency of the strongest storms -- Category 4 and 5 hurricanes -- has increased in recent decades.

Fake news! Alarmists start their data in the 1970s or 80s – that way they can ignore the contradictory data from the past.

Actual data contradicts CNN’s alarmism:

NOAA provides the following graph, showing that CNN’s choice of “since the early 1980s” is cherry-picking – i.e. fake news because it ignores most of the past, which gives a very different picture. Lies of omission.

https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/historical-atlantic-hurricane-and-tropical-storm-records/

The report states:

When one focuses only on landfalling storms (yellow lines) the nominal trend has been for a decrease.

And:

there is a small nominally positive upward trend in tropical storm occurrence from 1878-2006. But statistical tests reveal that this trend is so small, relative to the variability in the series, that it is not significantly distinguishable from zero … Thus the historical tropical storm count record does not provide compelling evidence for a greenhouse warming induced long-term increase.

From the CNN article:

"The historical Atlantic hurricane record does not provide compelling evidence for a substantial greenhouse warming-induced long-term increase (in storms)," said Ryan Maue, a research meteorologist at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank.”

Ryan Maue is referred to as a research meteorologist at a libertarian think tank. Libertarian is a bad word for the MSM because libertarians tend to think logically and independently instead of following the party line. (I refer to “the” party line even though there are two main political parties. That is because the Dems (or followers) have control of the media – CNN, NYT, WaPo, HuffPo, Colbert, Time, Kimmel, etc. etc. – while the GOP only has Fox).

Maue is one of the nation’s hurricane experts http://policlimate.com/tropical/index.html

https://www.wsj.com/articles/climate-change-hype-doesnt-help-1505672774

Some climate scientists have peddled tenuous theories with no contemporaneous research evidence. Advocacy groups package these talking points for easy consumption by journalists, who eagerly repeat them.

Real News

The MSM didn’t report the following:

Al Gore doesn’t like it.

POTUS Presidents

Two recent Presidents of the US, two global warming viewpoints:

Obama: "At a time of great fiscal challenges, this legislation is paid for by the polluters who currently emit the dangerous carbon emissions that contaminate the water we drink and pollute the air we breathe.

(Obama thinks CO2 pollutes drinking water – maybe he doesn’t know that sodas are polluted that way too, or that people buy carbonation devices to add it to drinks at home – such as Sodastream. He is also apparently ignorant of the fact that a non-poisonous, odorless gas that is CO2, does not harm breathing.)

Trump: “Well, I think the climate change is just a very, very expensive form of tax. A lot of people are making a lot of money. I know much about climate change.

At least Trump had the sense to get out of the Paris climate agreement:

The reality is that withdrawing is in America's economic interest and won't matter much to the climate," Trump said. "We will be environmentally friendly, but we're not going to put our businesses out of work."

Trump argued "no responsible leader" would subject his country to a deal that imposed such strict regulations for so little benefit.

"The agreement is a massive redistribution of United States wealth to other countries," Trump said.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trump-paris-deal-was-massive-redistribution-of-united-states-wealth/article/2624717

Many think that Obama has a nicer personality than Trump, but the position of President shouldn’t be primarily a personality issue – and someone as ignorant as Obama should not be given the power to control decisions that need logic and realistic understanding of economic and scientific issues.

Trump pulled out of the Paris climate agreement that Obama fell for. An agreement where the world’s largest CO2 emitter (China) can increase its emissions in an unlimited manner until 2030, while the US pays $3 billion to the greeny fund and reduces its own economy by reducing emissions to 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025 . (Obama already sent more than $1 billion of it before Trump became President.)

MSM Climate Change Alarmists:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/11/threat-climate-change-hurricane-harvey-irma-droughts

even if we kept the promises we made at Paris (which Trump has already, of course, repudiated) we’re going to build a planet so hot that we can’t have civilisations

So even the greenies think the Paris agreement will accomplish nothing in terms of the climate.

The Paris agreement is basically about wealth redistribution:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jun/5/paris-climate-agreement-shares-nations-wealth/

Washington Post criticizes Trump for saying there were stronger hurricanes:

We thought it was odd the president chose to focus on barometric pressure instead of the economic costs of hurricanes.

That’s because the WaPo doesn’t understand science – hurricane strength is estimated based on pressure or wind. (And almost every hurricane has higher costs than previous ones, obviously due to growth of the population / infrastructure in the storms’ path and its increasing economic value.)

Dr. Neil Frank, former Director National Hurricane Center, confirms what Trump said:

Over the past several weeks numerous articles suggest Harvey and Irma were the result of global warming. The concept is a warmer earth will generate stronger and wetter hurricanes. A number of people have said Irma was the most intense hurricane in the history of the Atlantic while Harvey was the wettest and both were good examples of what we can expect in the future because of global warming. What does a fact check reveal about these two hurricanes?

The lowest pressure ever recorded in an Atlantic hurricane was 882 mb while Wilma was in the northwest Caribbean Sea in 2005. The lowest pressure for a land falling hurricane was 892 mb when the 1935 hurricane crossed the Florida Keys. There have been 10 hurricanes with central pressures below 910 mb of which 5 were below 900 mb. Irma did not even make the top 10; therefore, it was not close to being the strongest hurricane ever observed In the Atlantic.

Since there is a direct relation between the pressure and the wind, if you know one you can compute the other.

Historically, the central pressure was the predominate factor in determining the strength of a hurricane. When the Saffir/Simpson hurricane scale was developed in the early 1970s, all past hurricanes were ranked on the Saffir/Simpson hurricane scale according to their central pressure. Today that policy has changed and now hurricanes are ranked exclusively by the wind.

Phil Klotzbach, hurricane expert at Colorado State University, provided the following table showing Irma and Harvey’s place in the list of major hurricanes [https://twitter.com/philklotzbach/status/906881395057844225]:

WaPo suggested Trump’s concern should be based on economic costs, not pressure (“it was odd the president chose to focus on barometric pressure instead of the economic costs of hurricanes”) as stated above.

WaPo - not too bright. The following graph shows that weather-related disaster costs have been declining. Mainly because there has been a drought of hurricanes over the last 12 years (contrary to Al Gore and the other scamsters’ claims of what CO2-based global warming produces).

Logic Eludes the MSM

From: https://theclimatefix.wordpress.com/2017/09/18/pielke-on-climate-5/

“The issue of hurricanes and climate change has morphed almost entirely to one of symbolism and signaling, even among many scientists, especially those who ware more vocal and political. There is not a lot of room for meaningful discussion on this subject. But nonetheless, here are a few thoughts:

o    Let’s simply postulate that (a) climate change makes all hurricanes worse than they otherwise would have been. Full stop. (Of course, “climate change” doesn’t do anything, the phrase has now become shorthand for “the emissions of carbon dioxide.”)

o    This leads us to a bit of a logic problem: (b) Neither tropical cyclones globally, Atlantic hurricanes overall, US landfalls nor US normalized damage has gotten worse (that is more frequent or intense) over climate time scales. (Don’t take it from me, this is straight out of the IPCC and US government’s National Climate Assessment)

o    So a logic test: Explain (a) in the context of (b). Though I am pretty sure that the answer is “Denier.”)”

Repetitive Fake News is Successful for the MSM

SORRY, TRUMP, MOST PEOPLE DO BELIEVE CLIMATE CHANGE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HURRICANES

A new poll from ABC News/Washington Post shows 55 percent of people polled September 18-21 believe climate change has something to do with the recent hurricanes, while 41 percent of the 1,002 adults surveyed believe, as President Donald Trump appears to, that it is just normal severe weather. The results of the poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, show a complete shift in attitudes from a decade ago, when in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, just 25 percent of people believed climate change was linked to the hurricane and 66 percent said it was just severe weather.

Amazing! After Katrina there was a 10 year drought of hurricanes – totally contradicting the global warming alarmists – and now that there were (finally) a couple of hurricanes, most people think the hurricanes are due to “climate change” caused by CO2?  Even though the science shows no evidence of global warming affecting hurricanes, the MSM have convinced the scientifically ignorant populace.
